Common questions
How much is probate tax in Ontario?
Ontario's estate administration tax is $0 on the first $50,000 of the estate and $15 for every $1,000 (or part of $1,000) above that, about 1.5%.
What counts toward the value of the estate?
The value of the estate's assets at the date of death, such as real estate (without deducting a mortgage), bank and investment accounts and vehicles. Assets that pass directly to a named beneficiary or by survivorship generally do not form part of the estate.
Do I have to pay the tax before I get the certificate?
Yes. The tax is paid when the application for the certificate of appointment of estate trustee is filed. An Estate Information Return must be filed within 180 days after the certificate is issued.
